Hi Fuschia.
It looks like a Small Heath to me also, however, there are a few more Coenonymphid species on the continent that here in the U/K. But in this case Small Heath C.pamphillus. fits.

Thanks Andrew - that's 2 for 2!
I just read that they don't open their wings when settled or land more than a metre above the ground - both things fit - I nearly stood on it!
