Patching Hurstpierpoint (1 Viewer)

Have decided to do a bit of patch working near my home in Hurstpierpoint, I haven't really done local birding before mainly sticking to nature reserves or other areas such as the coast or the Downs ,I shall still do these obviously just a bit less often.
I have managed to find an area close to home ,approx 5 mins in the car which has a variety of habitat which should be conducive to finding something of interest. With a few visits under our belts we have seen amongst others, Bullfinch, Spot Fly, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Whitethroat, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, Buzzard, Kestrel and Sprawk, plenty of Yellowhammers plus plenty of the commoner species Tits ,Finches etc the habitat also looks ok to provide some interest throughout the year, I will post updates on this thread while I maintain the enthusiasm which may not be long :)

Patch visit two

Visited my new Patch again today, much the same as before, lots of young birds. Good numbers of Common Whitethroat, Chiffchaffs and several Yellowhammers the best , had the Spot fly again but it eluded the camera ,must be the least cooperative Spot Fly i've ever seen they usually pose well for the camera

Well another good couple of hours on the local patch, Hundreds of White Butterflies , where I park the car and the sky full of Swifts and Hirundines although one less Swallow by the time we left, plucked from the air by a Hobby, lots of Butterflies as you would expect for the time of year, the best being an Oak Tree full of Purple Hairstreaks,great to see.

Green Woodpeckers

Another excellent wander around our new patch this morning, highlights were several Green Woodpeckers,that flew around a lot calling, as usual mostly to quick for me to get pictures of, although one in a tree eventually slipped up and I got a couple of shots, Other highlights were several Yellowhammers, families of Whitethroat and Blackcap and loads of Butterflies.

Another walk around my Hurstpierpoint Patch this morning nice views of a Hobby although by the time i put the bins down and picked the camera up it was quite distant so apologies for the poor Pic. Bit quieter this week all round, hopefully will start to pick up as Migration starts in earnest. More detail and a view pics at the link

Margie and I hit the patch again today, Yellowhammers, lot's of Whitethroats, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, big flock of Long-tailed Tits with several Chiffies tagging along and a Patch Tick Raven. but most of the highlights were insect based with several nice Dragonflies and Damselflies and the best being a Brown Hairstreak Butterfly, more detail and Pics of some of the above on my Blog at the link

Hit the patch on my own today, just after dawn to avoid the heat, Peregrine and a big flock of Mistle Thrushes the best, never seen so many Mistle Thrushes together, there must have been at least Twenty stretched over two trees, I'm presuming 2or 3 family groups, joining up!! Nice close encounter with a couple of Roe Deer as well, though scant evidence of any of the hoped for Migration through the patch today!!
