There appears to be monofilament of strung around the nest box. What is that for?

Sorry I did not find your post sooner...
The fishing line is to help discourage house sparrows from invading the nest, and was successful. The bluebirds were not bothered by it and, in spite of having many house sparrows in the area, they left our nest box alone. The babies fledged earlier this week and already we've had another pair of bluebirds showing interest in the nest box.
