It looks like sharpness drops off significantly at the long

It does, but every lens is the same, sharpness falls away at the outer edge. Centrally it is sharp and that's important, as your image isn't going to fill the full frame.

This lens looks good, ideal combo for travelling and walk-a-bout without the weight issues.

The XT-1 image quality is excellent so it will give you a reasonable chance for singing warblers, but for those distant shots of waders, probably not the best, but even with the expensive kit, you don't necessary achieve the results you want.
 
New guy here. Reviving an old thread to show some love for my most used lens. Love the 100-400.
