Terrible conditions for birding today. The Arctic blast that’s affecting much of the country brought several inches of snow and frigid temperatures. When I started out this morning the temperature was -16 degrees Fahrenheit (-27 Celsius) and the highest it got during the day was nine degrees Fahrenheit (13 Celsius). Needless to say, most of the lakes and rivers are frozen over, but there was some waterfowl on a few open streams. Despite the bitter cold, I surprisingly had a decent day, seeing 40 species.

The first 13 were at my feeder or in the yard first thing in the morning.

‘01. Dark-eyed Junco
‘02. Northern Cardinal
‘03. White-throated Sparrow
‘04. American Goldfinch
‘05. Black-capped Chickadee
‘06. Song Sparrow
‘07. Tufted Titmouse
‘08. White-breasted Nuthatch
‘09. House Finch
10. Blue Jay
11. House Sparrow
12. Red-bellied Woodpecker
13. American Crow
14. Mourning Dove
15. European Starling
16. American Kestrel
17. Mallard
18. Canada Goose
19. Red-tailed Hawk
20. Pileated Woodpecker
21. Eastern Bluebird
22. Downy Woodpecker
23. Swamp Sparrow
24. Sharp-shinned Hawk
25. Brown-headed Cowbird
26. Rusty Blackbird
27. Red-winged Blackbird
28. Red-breasted Nuthatch
29. Rough-legged Hawk
30. Rock Pigeon
31. Black Vulture

It's been slow, and I had to do errands today. Tomorrow! Unless we need to go out of town. Well, that would improve birding. Not counting the crows and starlings yet.

Two more today, giving the garden a distinctly aquatic feel.

53. Great Cormorant
54. Common Kingfisher

Back to Sweden tomorrow. I failed to make it to one of the lakes nearby this year, so there are lots of species that I wont get for a while now.
