RFI: Best identification guide to European birds (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

At the moment I am relying on a simple (but rather nice) field guide to the birds of central europe (D. Singer 2002 Welcher Vogel ist das? Kosmos) and am looking for another (couple?) of books to help with identification.

Details on how best to identify the various species is the key (although more additional info would be nice). The books do not need to be field guides.

Happy birding

The Collins Complete Guide (Grant, Mullarney, Zetterstrom) is the best European field guide, followed by that of Lars Jonsson.

Both would also be available in German in case you want to follow up on your present book:

Der neue Kosmos Vogelführer; Svensson, et al

or

Die Vögel Europas; Lars Jonsson

Both are Kosmos Naturführer. Jonsson has the English names as well.

Hi all,
thanks for your advice.

What are these two and how do they compare?:
Collins Bird Guide: The Most Complete Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe 6th edition 2004. by Lars Svensson (Autor), Peter J. Grant (Autor), Killian Mullarney (Illustrator), Dan Zetterstrom (Illustrator), David Christie (Übersetzer)

and

Collins Bird Guide: The Most Complete Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe 2001
von Peter Grant (Autor)

They're the same book (the Collins guide as recommended above), just in hardback and paperback editions.
