Is the a essex skipper with the antennal club being black below or is it a small skipper. I am new to butterfly IDing and am finding the skippers particularly hard! Thanks

Essex Skipper is the one which has black antennal club undersides, so the specimen on this picture is Essex Skipper (Thymelicus lineola).

Completely agree with Harri on this one.

Hi there Harri,

Any butterflies still on the wing up there? Good temps down here keeping stuff flying - Queen of Spain Fritillaries still in their colony, plus whites, Small Tortoiseshells, Red Admirals, Small Copper, etc

Hi Jos,

Here the weather has been a bit chilly and cloudy, so few butterflies are on flight now. Some Brimstones, Small tortoiseshells and Peacocks with a few Red admirals, too. Small tortoiseshell seems to be as frequent as Peacock this year.

I would say Small Tortoiseshells outnumbered Peacocks down here, especially in the latter parts of the season. Still some Brimstones still about.
