i'm not sure this thread should go in Cameras and photography or Computers, but checking a photographic forum i came across the following that Win xp users who update to the new service pack Sp2 may find that photoshop elements 2 will not work. the following URL will take you to the microsoft web site and will allow you to check which programs may be a problem
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxp
the list is long and even some of their own programs may not work. those winXp users who have the automatic updates may suddenly find that several of their programes do not work.

talk about Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot.

Hi Geoff:
Thanks so much for this post. Just got back from an Elder Hostel course on digital camera-computer interface. They recommended Photoshop Elements 2 v2, and I was just about to buy it when I saw your post. Adobe Photodelux BE came with my first Kodak, and I was very happy running it on Win 98. Current computer came with XP, and did not support the BE. Adobe furnished a parser (whatever the heck that means). Downloaded and installed, but never have been able to make it work. Wonder if it's possible that Elements v2 was brought out to get around the problem you outlined.

Thanks again Craig

Geoff: All is not lost. Go to:
www.adobe.com/support/main.html

The problem seems to involve opening <help> in many of the adobe prodicts
