Best is probably to repeat the request in this, usually quite responsive, part of birdforum devoted to CR: http://www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=561

The top thread at the moment in that section is about Guanacaste.

There is a good "where to watch" book (Lawson) available for CR, as well as a really good field guide (Garrigues and Dean get second edition)

We had a trip to Costa Rica 5 years ago and I wrote a trip report here:-
http://www.northwalesbirding.co.uk/f...lit=costa+rica

It's an amazing place for birding but there are loads of other things that you can do too if you like the adrenaline rush type of activity.
We hired a car and driving was easy despite warnings I had read mainly from neurotic Americans.
Looking on the map your hotel is quite remote so you have either the option of hotel based trips or hire car. You may be better with a 4x4 depending on when you are going. We went in the summer and it's the rainy season and it can flood the roads very easily and rapidly.
If you do hire a car get over to Arenal and treat yourselves to the best rooms at the Observatory for a night. Amazing view of the active volcano.
Bird guides charge top whack in Costa Rica but you don't need one especially if you have transport, there is plenty of stuff to be seen along the roadsides.
You have made an excellent choice of destination, hopefully the Riu will be good too. We recently stayed in the AI one in Agadir,Morocco and it was first class.
