I am sure some people will criticise this post,However everyone is entitled to their opinion. This is mine and no pulled punches !!!
My point is this,
There are many brilliant digiscopers today with stunning images to share but unfortunately some of them (not all) are very "elitist" and "wrapped up" in their own little "what camera or lens can i buy next syndrome"."Photographic Snobs" if you like.Unwilling to share their images or knowlege except amongst their closest "cronies".There are also certain photographers (non digiscopers) who consider digiscoping to be a "lower form of photography" and are simply not interested in digscoped images. (look at the voting figures !!!).I don't agree with Robin Edwards earlier post that digiscoped images are "inferior" to Dslr's.He should check the net and he will find "incredible" digiscoped images, equally impressive as Dslr's
As a "novice" digiscoper,i digiscope for my love of birds and try very hard to improve my images day by day.
We need more people like Paul Hackett who is a "True Digiscoper".Always ready to give helpful and practical advise.
I'm so sorry that the level of entries was so low this year.
A round of applause to Ian F for trying.

The explanation might be much simpler Brian. Not everyone is interested in competition whatever the format, and that includes entering or voting.

Oh and I would read Robin's entry again , you have misunderstood what he was saying !

Na, People are just lazy 8-P

how true this is for me, after the problem i had with my bigma, and the lack of long reach lenses for four third cameras, digiscoping was a great idea, but were is the time to learn it, it was easier for me to think of selling all my Olympus gear and change to Sony.

IMHO, i think if digiscopers could not find appreciation here in BF where else would they get it.

another suggestion that maybe the mods will not like, how about giving invitations to some of the members, i know many of BF who do digiscoping and i see there works on flicker, but they just don't think of submitting to the competition even if they post there work here.

Perhaps you are right rioja.
I hadn't thought of it from that perspective.

Gosh that was hard... some real top quality entries.

In response to some replies on this thread, i dont think Digiscoping is in decline, the fact is that some Digiscopers have moved on from Digiscoping to DSLR, the other factor to consider is that some birders are still discovering Digiscoping and this includes long time birders and obviously new birders.

Competitions are not to everybody's taste, i have entered this for a few years now just to participate, ( still not won one though !) its the taking part and keeping the hobby alive that works for me, i would take an educated guess and say there are far more active Digiscopers on BF than we think? just look at the number of hits in the Digiscoping Cameras section threads? and the number of pictures in the last year taken by Digiscopers in the BF Gallery? And we have forgotten the Astroscope People ( Paul Corfield and others who contribute regularly on BF, what about a competition for them? )

My personal bias is that i feel to take a very good Digiscoped picture takes some of the same skills the DSLR photographer has, Composition, Fieldcraft, Photoshop skills, and and oh, one more that the majority of DSLR Photographers dont have to worry about "Manual Focusing" not everybody has the eye to hand coordination.

I think the competition for Digiscopers still has its place, but if numbers were to drop further next year, yes i would then agree that its time to have a rethink on keeping the Digiscoping section.

Paul

The numbers were never high and this might just be a blip. I agree with Paul Hackett and think it deserves another chance.
Andy

I think a little gentle 'encouragement' is all that's needed for those people in the digiscping forum who for one reason or another didn't enter and we could soon make up the numbers. I think it's probably the same as others have said in that digiscoping requires a lot more effort and perserverance to get the results and maybe some just don't fell they're getting results good enough to enter. DSLR's are almost point and shoot fool proof these days. ;)

Well done to those that entered and although I have never digiscoped enjoyed all and my vote was between current draw. I have enjoyed this category like the rest over the years I have visited this site. Well done all will be interesting to see result now race is so close :)

I think that there are 13 winners this year! Everyone of them deserves a large round of applause. Kudos to all! It was hard for me to choose between an amazing difficult picture that is certainly out of my reach of capabilities or an absolutely stunning picture. I see the two are tied. I like this digiscoping theme. I hope it continues.

Despite the low number of entries this month the voting proved better than for several months. A real close run thing in the end which has ended in a tie.

In view of the comments in this thread I think we'll still give this theme another go next year before making a decision over it's future.

The Joint Winners with 25/101 votes are -

Paul Hackett with Digiscoped Red Kite

and

5bellies with Head banger!

Runner up with 10/101 votes -

horukuru with Crimson Sunbird

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who took the time to view the entries and to cast their vote :t:

That is good news! we better get as many digiscopers involved then and congratz on the joint winners

There were some cracking shots this year... as usual. I'm very proud my shot drew with such a technically difficult shot to pull off. Thank-you to all those that took the time to enter, write comments, vote and view the entries. I'm extremely glad the competition is being run again next year, when hopefully more of the users of the forum will take part.

Cheers Gary

This division always has great photos in it - even if the numbers of entries are not high. Excellent efforts by all and congratulations to the winners.

In my oppinion only, ... this is a photo competition not a equipment competition. Therefore I think all the catergories may include any type of still image format wether it be DSLR or Digiscoped. I would prefer not to have catergories where people cant enter because of the gear they are using. To me it's like having a Canon or Nikon catergory. This would also free up room for a new theme.

Warning! This thread is more than 13 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
