came home (Oxford, UK, today) to find this decapitated woodpigeon

is this more likely a sparrowhawk or cat? -- we have both here

Check that the feathers have been plucked out, leaving the ends of the shafts intact, rather than bitten off as a cat does.

Will do

Although further dismemberment may confound matters

EDIT 4/10/18

Virtually all evidence destroyed by the magpies.....next time I will look more quickly

Grim. I saw a wood pigeon like this a few weeks ago, missing its head. Lots of feathers scattered around. I know there's at least one female sparrowhawk locally but I couldn't possibly say what caused it. There are definitely more cats and foxes around than sparrowhawks though.
