we got to the lake in the mid-morning and noticed the abundance of coots, which are seen on the lake mostly in the winter. we also saw the usual mallards and pied-billed grebes. there were a few small groups of buffleheads as well, there for the winter. then we found what we had come to look for:hooded mergansers. there were five females and a beautiful male. then we got a surprise bird we had never seen at this lake: in the water near a small muddy beach were seven female common mergansers. finally, to top it all off, we saw about six ring-necked duck. a great day indeed.
