Probably Baltimore oriole for me... Having moved from Herts to Norfolk the previous year I had to go back for a meeting and decided that while I was in the area I should go for the oriole. The meeting ran on longer than it should as the friend who I had travelled with though we should just head straight back to Norfolk but I decided that we should push on and chance getting there after it had gone to roost. Drove fairly enthusiastically to ensure there was some daylight left when we got there, parked up and walked the short distance to the spot where a few birders were standing. The bird had not been seen for about an hour (some thought it may have roosted early) and it was bitterly cold, on the brink of giving up my friend wander off to take a phone call. As they left the bird flew up the garden to it's favoured roosting spot (deep in a fir), I got a flight view that lasted less than 2 seconds.

It was a bird that I really wanted to enjoy watching and the views were hugely disappointing. It was made worse by then having to drive three and a half hours home with my friend who had dipped it. The cold and the gulf have stayed with my much more clearly than the crap view I had.

Least memorable for brevity of views were probably Baird's Sandpiper at Blithfield in (I think) '97 - distant due to low water levels & Red-throated Pipit on Scilly in '99 - flew over calling but never seen on deck. Seen both much better since, including the former two years ago on my local patch at Upton Warren.

Buff-bellied Pipit on Scillies not long after Paul Holt found it, just a Pipit.....

Amazingly, Paul identified it on call as it flew over, that's talent.
