Two US birds I don't id ! (1 Viewer)

Hello everybody !
Here are two pictures of two birds I took late july.
The sandpiper was in Mono Lake, California.
The hawk on a road to Needles, Canyonlands NP, Utah.

Have you got an idea ? thanks a lot in advance ! :)

Hard to be certain, but that looks like rather strong barring on the tail of the hawk, and a strong black-and-white pattern in the secondaries. Why not a young red-shouldered hawk?
 
I don't think the secondaries have a strong pattern here; at least, if they do, I can't see it, because they are in shade. Anyway, they look all dark to me.

There's also the range & habitat consideration - there really shouldn't be a Red-shouldered anywhere near Canyonlands N.P.
