Mystery metallic green bee (1 Viewer)

I saw a large (bumble bee sized) bee, metallic green, fast, strong flying. It was definitely not a dragonfly. Seen in Datchet, Berkshire, UK today. Does anyone have any ideas as to the ID please? I haven't seen one like it before!

Apologies but I didn't manage to photograph this one at all. It quickly flew in, flew around and then buzzed off, and it didn't land at all - there were no flowers nearby!

Thanks folks! I was pretty certain it wasn't a beetle, but you might be right; I guess we'll never know for sure!
