OK, not a mega rarity but a nice garden tick when I opened the blinds this morning. Could only grab a couple of quick snaps with my mobile.

Unfortunatelly I have to tell you this is a Woodpigeon... note the diagnostic black spots on the tertials and greater coverts are missing... sorry :(
 
Um....yes...er well done you've both passed the test...

Seriously though an important diagnostic lesson here to consider all of the bird and not be fixated by one part - i.e. the dark eyes lacking a white ring.

Now, I've got a black woodpecker in my back garden if you Ignore the red. And the spots...
