I'm not to sure if thats the correct title, but its a book i saw in a 2nd hand shop some time ago,I went back for it and guess what?...its gone.Does anyone know where i can source a copy of this one?many thanks.

The book that you are looking for is:

Birds by Character: A Field Guide to Jizz
Rob Hume, Peter Partington, Ian Wallace (Illustrator), John Busby (Illustrator), John Rees (Illustrator)

published in 1990 by Papermac
ISBN: 0333489071

It seems that it's currently out of print and the main UK booksellers don't have a copy - I checked for you. Best to try some of the specialist secondhand shops. Try google! At least the above details may help you.

Good luck.

Try an ad in your local reserve visitor centres,if any.
I got a copy from a local v.c. book sale last year where the books were donations from the public.

I've got a copy I don't use. PM me. Tim

If available at the price I paid originally...£8.00 then I might buy it but if at current prices than no I wouldn't. Good idea...flawed execution.
Liked the semi finished sketches but the tall but narrow page format is a bind.

I thought the book was excellent, but limited by its subject matter. Jizz will always be personal; it's how you spot your wife/best friend in a crowd, instinctive rather than something that can be explained in black and white, and built on by experience. It's a good starting point to becoming a better field observer, but it won't help get an ID past the RBC!!

RBC? Is that something like Rare Bird Commitee? Sorry for asking, but Google was not exactly helpful here. And abbreviations are always tricky for the uninitiated.

That's exactly what it is, swissboy! Apologies for abbreviation, so easy to forget they're not universal.

Thanks for the replys and information, can I ask how you rate the book?

A bit rubbish. Nice pics from DIMW, but seriously lacking in text. I'm willing to bet the contents of my pockets, which is... hold on... £8.34 and a toffee wrapper.... that no one has ever used that book to successfully identify a bird. If you already know what the birds are like you can empathise with the descriptions, but if you can't already id them this book will not help. ('Hmmmm... that bird is a little self-effacing, let's see,.... must be.... a Bullfinch!' etc.)
