It's OK to be a little blue........
Possibly the closest thing we have to the UK's birdfairs is Migration weekend at the Ottawa National refuge near Oak harbor Ohio. The refuge of 12,000 acres plus will be opened to drive through from 9am-4pm both days. The roads along the dikes offer a variety a habitats including marsh, meadow, forest, mudflat and beach. The area is renown for its population of bald eagles, duck and a large influx of migrant shorebirds, gulls, terns and warblers. Two miles east on Rt 2 is Magee Marsh/Crane Creek State Park. This park is famous for warbler sightings.Recent visits here have caught little blue heron and snowy egret. This year a new trail has been opened between Lake Erie and the eastern marsh. The fair takes place in the parking lot of Crane Creek beach with vendors of optics, birding gear and grilled grub.A boardwalk runs through a marsh in which yellowheaded blackbirds were recently seen.Oak harbor is about 12 miles west of Sandusky Ohio on Rt 2.Both sites can be easily covered in a day.See you there.
