BWP Concise - Help!! (1 Viewer)

I have been trying to buy a copy of the concise Birds of the Western Palearctic but simply CANNOT find a copy at a reasonable price. It seems it is now impossible to find a new copy at the knockdown price (or indeed any price!). I've searched pretty much everywhere, on-line and off. Used copies are scarce and cost a fortune.

If anyone knows of a reasonably-priced copy available (perhaps gathering dust on a shelf in some bookshop) I would be extremely grateful if you could let me know by PM. Or indeed if anyone is happy to part with theirs for a reasonable price (perhaps you've now got the electronic version, or an extra copy, or are simply feeling charitable!) I would be equally grateful.

Please help!!! Thanks you.

Michael - getting desperate!

£49.50 from whsmiths, amazon etc.

Graeme.

Thanks Graeme, but that's the trouble. All these sites are still advertising the book, but it's out of print and they cannot get any copies. I've tried all the specialist ornithology / natural history shops too and its the same story - out of print, suppliers have no copies, and they've sold out themselves.

Try ringing Focalpoint in Cheshire:

Amazon has a second hand for £96 - but I bet an RSPB shop will still have one at £49 - have you tried ringing the reserves with shops?

Thanks Rob and Jeff. WH Smith can't get it (although they, and others, still advertise it ?!), but I'll try the reserve shops too.

Try wwt centre shops too.The one at Caerlaverock near Dumfries usually had copies.

Try ringing Bakewell Bookshop (T/A Wildlife Books and Gifts)
Matlock Street
Bakewell
DE45 1EE
Telephone 01629 812818

I was there at the weekend and I'm sure they had a copy for £49.

BirddBooksOnline.co.uk are showing this title in stock at £58.50....and if you think that's expensive, you should see what some of us mugs paid for it when it was first published...Cheers OUP :C

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Just to update - no copies in any RSPB shop, WWT shop, or Bakewell's. The book on Birdbooksonline is actually the Beaman & Madge ID handbook. None of the usual bird book or natural history outlets that I've tried have any copies. Have found a couple of used copies for sale - cheapest being £90 (over £100 with p&p), which I'm debating whether I can afford. I might just have to grit my teeth and pay it - it's what it cost when it first came out. The ebay one's still a possibility although the price is crawling higher and will probably shoot up toward the close. Busy trawling all the second-hand natural history shops at present for a better deal. What's sickening is that I've heard the same story again and again - 'Oh we had loads but we just sold the last one a week / month ago for £37'!!
Anyway, I'll keep trying. Please let me know of all sightings of this rare bird!!

Yes, I came across that too Rob. I'm looking into it, but I'm a little wary. The website gives no indication who this person is, his e-mail address doesn't inspire too much confidence (jokr59@...?!), and I dread to think what shipping 6-7 kilos of books across the Atlantic would cost! It would certainly add a fair bit to the £72 he's asking. I might as well get one of the two used ones on offer in the UK for £90 and £96 (which it looks like I'll have to do). Although he's the cheapest in America - the other two I've found are £182 and £357!! Also on the go are one for £75 from Australia and £200 from Spain.

Just an after-thought. Someone got a real bargain on ebay today. The full 9 vol. BWP plus the concise BWP for a Buy-it-Now price of £175!! I was indeed tempted, but while I was soul-searching whether I really needed it / had the money it was gone. He who hesitates...
(I just hope whoever bought it appreciates it and is not just out to make a profit by reselling).
