Wildlife guides (1 Viewer)

Whereabouts within CR are you going, and for how long?

For birds, Garrigues and Dean, 2nd ed. is the current standard:
https://www.amazon.com/Birds-Costa-Rica-Tropical-Publications/dp/0801479886/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1502230550&sr=1-1&keywords=birds+costa+rica

For mammals, this one is reasonably complete for CR:
The Mammals of Costa Rica: A Natural History and Field Guide

I've tried a few plant guides, and this is the one I like best:
Tropical Plants of Costa Rica: A Guide to Native and Exotic Flora

For snakes, the one we used most at the field research station was
Serpientes de Costa Rica / Snakes of Costa Rica - expensive on Amazon, but I recall it could be purchased in-country for much less.

If this is your first trip to Costa Rica / Neotropics, I also highly recommend:

The New Neotropical Companion by John Kricher

and

Birds of Tropical America by Steven Hilty

All this being said, while having all of the above, and then some, I've been to CR six times (seven coming up this winter), and Garrigues and Dean is the only one that goes back and forth with me.

Have fun!
Dan

Hi Dan,

Drake Bay/Corcovado for a week and then Manzanillo for a week.
Thanks for the useful info. Think that plant book would suit me. Also the Garrigues and Dean.
