Canon SX50 Specs (1 Viewer)

I have mine up and running, but no bird pics yet. It has been a horrible dank, dark, drizzly day today.

Took a few pics from my window, though.

The IS is astonishing - usable hand-held at 100X zoom in poor light conditions.

Fortunately the Bee-eater stayed around for our return home from holiday today.

Still giving great views today.

Great vid.

Left a comment asking about zoom and tripod.

I've given up all thoughts of digiscoping since getting my SX 50 a couple of days ago. It is so hard, and my best results were roughly comparable to my SX 30.

I still very much like the SX50.

The video was taken using a tripod and using the built in teleconverters, mainly the 2x though one clip was with the 1.5x converter. I think for video you really need to fill the frame as much as you can. For stills, the 1.5x converter is pretty good.

I couldn't resist any longer so picked up an sx50 today. I'll be out in the field over the next few days and will post some impressions.
Neil.

I took the sx50hs for it's first outing this morning in dull light. Not the best for stretching it's legs but I did some tests anyway.
I shot it against the SX40 to try and appreciate the extra zoom. I'm processing some Raw images at the moment but here are two composites -
1. showing sx40 at full zoom and sx50 at equivalent zoom and then at full zoom (1200 mm)
2. showing 24 mm and 1200 mm of the same subject at distance in hazy light.

Great comparison shots Neil, can't wait to get hold of mine

Ya Neil,

I think that DavidNB is correct on the boat pictures.

Using my SX40 for at 24mm and 840, here is the difference in magnification that I posted once in the SX40 topic.

The car is in the late afternoon shadows.

Wide angle. Try to spot the car in the center.

Zoom in on the car.

I have not altered the photo bucket ones in any way but upload.

ETA, I've resized but not cropped the same photos to attach.

Rather odd question here... I have been looking at the SX50 or the SX40, now I have an iMac running Leopard 10.5. (yes I know I should have up graded!) and I notice that in the specs for the SX50 it says it suports OS v10.6 on so I'm guessing it will not be compatible with my machine? The SX40 supports 10.5 so that should work.
No good getting a camera that doesn't download vids and photos! Anyone running such an old OS and using the SX50?

Cheers

A video clip of part of our local Starling Roost tonight. They came in three separate flocks tonight.

Taken on auto, though usually I use the dedicated video mode.

Here is some of my testing pictures, taking last saturday.

First wide angle (4,3 mm), second 55 mm and last full zoom (215 mm) plus 4,0 x digital zoom.

Pretty amazing zoom I´d say.:king:

Yes they demonstrate the zoom no question, however we mainly talk about bird photos on here and in that respect it is a matter of image quality rather than zoom ability.

I wonder what shooting mode where you using, Auto, AV or Manual?

Robert,
I was shooting in Video Mode. I did notice after the test that the SX40 was in Vivid Mode so there will be a small difference in Saturation.
For birds I would mostly be in A Mode with a -0.7 compensation ( for white birds -1.3 Mode ).
