Hi all,

I'm going to Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo for a week in late May.

My key birding target is lilfordi White-backed Woodpecker, and I'd really appreciate any advice for finding this species in Abruzzo - anyone any suggestions, or had any luck themselves?

In addition, I'd like to try for both Marsican Brown Bear and Apennine Wolf - I understand there is a 'viewpoint' new a church somewhere?? Again, any and all suggestions much appreciated.

Hi. I will post some advices litte by little I will find them.
Your target woodpecker is to be found in the clearings of the forests of the Foro Valley, near the village of Pretoro, Maiella National Park:

I imagine the roads in this area are slow - I'm staying near Sulmona; would you know which is best to drive to from there? Thanks!

Any other ideas and suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion Delia, appreciate your input. Unfortunately, the information in your 'opus' is very generic - I was hoping for real detail about these very hard to find, but possible to see, species.

To go to Pretoro: from Sulmona to Chieti, and from Chieti to Pretoro.
To go to Zompo lo Schioppo: From Sulmona to Avezzano, and from Avezzano to Morino (see this map:
