Two Woodpigeon questions (1 Viewer)

Hello everyone,
So I had a pair of woodpigeons nesting in my garden, laid the usual two eggs. A couple of days ago I had a look at the nest and found a young chick, obviously had hatched a couple of days before, and one unhatched egg. Today I had another look--the chick was gone, but the unhatched egg was still there. The nest shows no sign of disturbance, and the fact that the egg is still there makes me sceptical of a raid. I've looked all around the ground, but no sign of the little fella. I guess he might have fallen out and then been taken by a predator? Any thoughts?
Also, do you think the woodpigeons will nest again this year, and if so, do they ever re-use nests? As I said, this one is still in perfect condition (or as perfect as woodpigeons nests ever are). Will they shove out the dead egg and lay again, perhaps?
Thanks.

I suspect your guess of fallen and taken by a ground scavenger is the most likely.

They will nest again (up to 5 broods a year is known!), but will usually build a new nest. Woodpigeons nest all year round; one year a few years ago my 'yeartick' Woodpigeon on 1 January was a newly fledged juvenile that could only just fly.
