Unhappy Elephant Hawk-Moth larvae Help

I recently found an Elephant hawk moth and decided to keep it.

i placed it in a tub with some grass and Fuschia leaves/flowers and a few stems
after a few days the caterpillar made itself a cocoon and 1 week later the caterpillar hasnt turned into a pupa, its gone much dark and smaller than it was and its sort of curled up abit with its head tucked into it 6 main legs, It also twitches and flails a fair bit too.

has it failed to pupate and dying or am i just being paranoid?
how long after making a cocoon do these caterpillars take to actually turn into a pupae?

any advice would be great thank you
