northern saw-whet owl question

There have been 2 occasions this year that I have heard a call at night that sounds identical to the "toot" series that a Northern Saw-Whet Owl makes, however on both occasions the noise was limited to a single "toot". I have listened to hundreds of recordings of them and none cover this variation, every recording that I have heard displays a series of toots and never a single toot. I have heard recordings of an alarm call that is a single, somewhat cat-like call but that is not similar to what I have been hearing.

I am hoping to get some input on whether or not others have any experience with Saw-whet owls giving a single toot as opposed to the typical series of toots such as those recorded on the Sibley app and xeno-canto.org.
