Leica - Handmade. (1 Viewer)

That was great! Thanks for posting the link.

My only Leica is a 1967 M4 and a 1957 Summicron 5 cm DR lens. I'd love an Ultravid binocular.

CSG,

Put your weekly beer allotment in a pickled pig's feet jar and start saving up for one now. You can make your own potato beer.

If there's truth to Lee's rumor that Leica is going to unveil a new Uberbin next year, dealers will have blow out sales on the old Ultravids to make room for the "latest and greatest" from Leica (Perger prisms, field flatteners, HD glass that actually makes a difference, and, of course, Blue Tooth :).

See this thread for more speculative details (remember the stages of the discussions I wrote about? This is the first stage for the new Leicas):

New Leicas!

Chances are, the new design is on the drawing board if not already in prototype, but just in case a Leica rep is browsing the forum and the company has not solidified its plans, add your 2 cents on which features you'd like to see on the new Leicas. My suggestion was for 0% financing with a credit score of 500.

Nice video.

If anyone is listening from Leica. Can we please, please have a updated Duovid. Magnesium body, HD optics and a slightly wider fov would do nicely.

Cheers Tim

I had read that Leica applies light absorbent lacquer to the edges of its lenses to cut down on stray light. It was interesting to see it being applied to the glass edges.

I was also pleased to see a high percentage of female employees performing skilled technical tasks.

Was the freezer treatment to provide some kind cryogenic conditioning or part of quality control to test the low temp performance? My Ultarvid HDs perform as well @ (-10F) (-28C) as they do in the tropics - one finger focus.

That's the problem edj.
Leica hardly sell any Duovids compared to Ultravid's.

You never know though, Leica might see the poor sales figures for Duovids a reason for a update ?

Tim

Leica needs to pull their collective heads out of their azzzes and come up with a US warranty that is comparable to their direct competitors....Swaro, Zeiss, Nikon EDG. It's pathetic, and a pathetic reflection on their company.

. For top firms the edge lacquer varies with the refractive index of each glass element. In addition they apply two separate baked coats to really do the job properly.

I think this video is a about boosting Leica's "PR" image.

Is it really going to make up for the countless customer care issues over recent years ?
Come on Leica were not that gullible.

Tim

The most interesting thing I saw in the video was what appeared to be an Uppendahl prism in the cutaway view of the Geovid 8x42. That's the prism design used in the original Leitz Trinovid. A little Googling produced a patent application which does indeed show an Uppendahl variant in the Geovid.

Henry,

The cutaway shown below in page 22 of the Company7 PDF of the 2003 Leica Geovid looks like the one above. You might want to look at it. I'm not sure if it is the same.

Bob,

it looks like three different prisms have been used in the three generations of Geovid binoculars.

1) Geovid BD, the individual focus binocular in your link used what looks like a Porro Type 2.

2) Geovid HD, the binocular in the patent application I linked to used an Uppendahl Roof. See the bottom diagram of the visual light path from the patent application here:

3) Geovid HD-B with Perger Porro Prism. See the prism diagram from the patent application here:
