I have some trail camera videos that I would like to post but the file format is .avi. I don't know how to convert them to a different file format. Is there anyway that I can post them?

By far the easiest way is to start a YouTube account, upload them there, let YouTube worry about converting and then post a link.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm looing for a piece of software that would allow me convert files and also do things like splicing videos together.

Video editing has a very steep learning curve. If you just want to trim and splice clips together then both Macs and Windows come with a basic video editor, if you want to do more then Shotcut is good https://shotcut.org/
