Hi there, am visiting Emmeloord for several days in early June ( work-related) but hopefully will get a bit of time to do some birding. Can anyone help with some nearby locations to reach by taxi or bus ? any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi Gus,

I'm not too familiar with the immediate surroundings of Emmeloord, but, depending on the available time, perhaps a visit to the Weerribben National Park would be an idea. It's an area of bogs, extensive reed beds and lots of water. You can either walk or rent a boat or canoe to explore the area. A good starting point is the visitor's centre, which can apparently be reached by taking bus 76 (direction Steenwijk-exit at Venebosweg bus stop). You could expect quite a variety of reed- and waterbirds there, including: black tern, purple heron and spoonbill.
Some information about the area:

The location of the visitor's centre on Google Maps:

Some of the sightings in june, taken from waarneming.nl. If the list is in Dutch, you can change the language in the top right corner.

Hope you have an enjoyable trip.
Kind regards,
Peter

Emmeloord is in the middle of an ornithological wasteland, but the area just to the east is great.
If it's work-related you'll probably be short-changed for the better sites (weekend public transport may be troublesome, although the best areas draw many tourists).

I'll second the Weerribben: especially the southern part (Woldlakebos) is good for birds you don't tend to see in the UK. With some luck, Great Reed Warbler or Savi's Warbler may also be found. The area is excellent for rare dragonflies if you're so inclined. My advice would be to rent a bike in Ossenzijl if you're interested in exploring the area: it's huge and the interesting areas are distant from any bus stop.
The large Kuinderbos (west of Kuinre, also bus 76) may be interesting for forest birds (especially from a UK perspective). At least it's relatively close to Emmeloord.
The Roggebotzand could be much better, if they don't disturb the highly visible White-tailed Eagles this year; Golden Oriole occurs as well. Not that easy to reach from Emmeloord by public transport (about 1 hour: bus 141 to Kampen, 143 to Roggebotsluis, followed by quite a walk).
It's also possible that the former island of Schokland has something of interest in June (some marsh has been created there which has held Baillon's Crake), but this would (again) involve a stiff walk.

9292.nl is the public transport site to check, but you'll need an address for start and finish. Taxis are very expensive!
