Think this might be a piping plover, but not certain. Picture was take March 23, 2010 at Long Key State Park which is on one of the middle keys in Florida.

Yes, it's a Piping Plover. A Semipalmated would be darker on top, and have a complete dark breast band.

Guess the all dark bill is a feature of Piping also in Winter? The breast band looked joined up, until I magnified it after your post. I bow to your greater judgement!

Yes, Piping Plovers have a dark bill in basic plumage. In alternate plumage the bill is orange from the base up about half-way. This individual looks like it may be molting into alternate plumage, but not there yet.

And BTW, be cautious about bowing to my judgement - it has proven to be faulty on occasion!

Well, at least you're on the right side of the pond for these birds! ;)

It is definitely a Piping Plover. Also note the "round" and "cute" build of this bird vs the leaner appearance of a Semipalmated Plover.

Also the distinct black band, in a zone, on the forehead hasn't been mentioned?

I just ID'd it on the thumbnail. Never done that before! Idiot I am!

But just to show I have seen a REAL Semi-P, here are my notebook sketches for, I believe, the 2nd ever British record, at Dawlish Warren, Devon, England ion 1.8.97.

Next time, I'll be better off referring to my notes! Learnt a lot though!

And many congrats to Jonsund for confirming it as a rare Piping! :t:
