The winter programme opened this year with a whoosh netting session. A decent flock of birds has been in the area since before harvest, with a field of rape next door being a big draw. Feeding started about a month ago.

Last Thursday a visit had to be aborted when it started raining - 3 or 4 hours earlier than forecast ! Many fewer birds around than a few weeks ago with little feed being taken - where have they gone ?
All retraps so far this autumn have been ringed in previous years.

A small (young presumably) short tailed vole enchanted me, crawling under and around the feed bin obviously looking for a way in. It was also checking me out, coming closer and closer as if trying to test my reaction. It even crept up behind my clock, then popped its head over the top for a gander a few times. Eventually it summed up the courage to swarm up level with the top of the feed bin (I had the lid off) but found it was too big a jump to get in. Maybe just as well - it could not have got out.

Mainly forgetting corvids, gulls, non-natives, pigeons and tits.

Thanks for your reports Mike.
Thats a lot of Linnets trapped so far this year!

My pleasure Alan,

I work on winter season counts, rather than calendar years. This last lot makes 200 ringed this winter so far which is not exceptional. It is much more complicated working out how many individuals I have trapped that were ringed in previous winters, which I think stands at almost thirty.

Time I ran a full analysis :)

Mike.
