I have a dwarf crab tree about four feet from my house, and robins have used a nest in there which is about four feet off the ground, in previous years and this year.
The location is a fairly busy one, right next to the driveway and front porch, so there are lots of comings and goings.
Anyway, this year there were 4 eggs in the nest, that I noticed last week, with an attendant mom there much of the time. (I can easily see right into the nest from an upper window in the house.) Yesterday, mom and (when she left briefly) four eggs were there.
This morning when I looked, only three eggs were there and I have not seen the mother in the nest all day, which is very unusual. None of the eggs were starting to hatch, and there is no sign of a broken egg anywhere. It just disappeared.
Can anyone guess as to what might have happened? I find this bizarre.
Also, is there anything I can do to save the hatchlings, if indeed they do survive? I know they will need food.
