House finch ? Switzerland (1 Viewer)

Jérémy Savioz
Hello,

A non indigenous Finch is currently showing up and singing in a garden in Eastern Switerzland. Pictures tend to think it is a House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), which is quite commonly held in captivity in Europe. However, the recording of the song is totaly different than that I could find on the Internet.

Could you please help me with the ID (see recording and pictures attached) ? Could it be an hybrid between a House Finch and another ornamental bird (such as a canary) ?

Thank you.
Greetings,

Jérémy

Yes, why isn't it a Common Rosefinch?

It's for sure not a Common Rosefinch - pp too short, flank streaking, distinctly patterned undertail coverts.

I think Andrew's idea is a good one. If it is an escape (is there any record of House Finch in Europa that is considered a wild bird?) who knows where, when, by whom it was raised and what birds it could learn the song from.

The streaking is much less than I would expect on a wild House Finch - whether this is because of hybridization or selective breeding in captivity I cannot say.
