Apr 25, Changi Business Park, Singapore

A new bird for my CBP list and a surprising omission from my year list so far.

534. Rose-ringed Parakeet

May 1, Pulau Ubin, Singapore

We spent the morning and early afternoon on Ubin in fairly steady light rain and drizzle which wasn't ideal however three new birds for 2011.

535. Mangrove Blue Flycatcher
536. Great-billed Heron
537. Thick-billed Green Pigeon

May 15, East Coast Park, Singapore

Not a new bird for my overall year list but new (#139) for Singapore in 2011 a flock of Red-whiskered Bulbul's. Previously in the 2011 I've seen these in Australia and Thailand.

May 16, Panti Forest, Malaysia

Having failed to see a Giant Pitta which seemed to be standing alongside me calling last month I resolved to try again but this time not a sound let alone a sighting. Panti Forest never disappoints though and made up for it with a different mega bird in a Storm's Stork which flew overhead along the trail. Two lifers, Cinnamon-rumped Trogon and Short-toed Coucal rounded out a day in which 89 species were seen.

May 21, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Attending a children's birthday party added Grey-rumped Treeswift and Lesser Whistling Duck to my Singapore 2011 list, taking it to 141.

Jun 5, Pulau Ubin, Singapore

A rainy day added one more bird to my Singapore year list, a pair of Red-wattled Lapwings taking the list to 142.

June 17, Cat Tien National Park, Vietnam

An early flight from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City had us in Vietnam for 9:30am - an hour later than expected due to engine problems in Singapore. Transport arranged we then hit the road for what turned out to be a 4 1/2 hour journey due to traffic at the start and bad weather in the last part.

In what was to be pattern for our time in the lowlands by mid to late morning torrential rain would start and keep up pretty well for the rest of the day. As a consequence photo opportunities were limited and when possible in very poor light - we didn't see the sun until our last day in Vietnam.

No new year birds were seen enroute to Cat Tien and a short walk in the rain around HQ only added 3 new birds in the afternoon - but 2 were lifers!

557. Ashy-headed Green Pigeon
558. Black-and-red Broadbill

559. Little Spiderhunter

Photo below is of one of the two Tokay Gecko's that were resident in the bungalow.

First bird of the morning was an Asian Barred Owlet seen just before dawn from the bungalow. The photo below was taken in later in the day and is probably a different individual.

Prior to breakfast it was decided to walk the Lagerstroemia Trail to try for a Bar-bellied Pitta which proved successful. An Indochinese Cuckooshrike was seen prior to getting to the trail.

First bird this morning was again an owl. A Brown Hawk Owl sitting almost on the same branch as the Asian Barred Owlet the morning before.

579. Brown Hawk Owl

Our first walk of the morning was along Lagerstroemia Trail and a flooded Uncle Dong's Trail which for much of its length was a stream. No new birds along Lagerstroemia but a pair of Germain's Peacock-pheasants were the highlight of Uncle Dong's.

580. Germain's Peacock-Pheasant
581. White-crested Laughingthrush
582. Puff-throated Babbler

After breakfast we headed out to the Grasslands to make the most of the dry morning.

583. Asian Golden Weaver
584. Green Peafowl

In an afternoon of drizzle turning to heavy rain we walked down to Heaven's Rapids.

585. Lesser Necklaced Laughingthrush

The final bird of the day were three Great Eared Nightjars flying over Park HQ as we were about to jump on a truck to go on a night safari - no night birds spotted on this and the best mammal were several Gaur.

586. Great Eared Nightjar

The birds didn't cooperate much for photos I'm prepared to put on here today, so here are some of the other creatures of the park instead.

June 25, Dalat City, Vietnam

The morning was spent doing touristy things before flying to Saigon in the afternoon. Only the one new bird around the lake in the centre of town.

636. Crested Myna

Jun 26, Saigon, Vietnam

Having spent sunset at a bar the night before on the bank of the Saigon River looking across to the demolished District 2, which will presumably be sky scrapers at some point, and thinking it looked ok for some birds that was the destination for a dawn walk. Whilst the birds were pretty much the same as I'd see commonly in Singapore quite a few were new for the trip. There was however one new bird we don't get here in Singapore, quite a few Oriental Darters flew over from the wetlands they roost in amongst the demolished buildings of the area.

637. Oriental Darter

That was the last birding for the day with a late-afternoon flight back to Singapore. A full list of the birds seen during this trip can be seen at www.viatorphoto.com/wildlife_galleries/birds/lists/list.php?CountryCode=VN
