I know these are tough to tell apart...

Does anyone know if this is a greater or lesser scaup?

Lesser it is.

I suppose the giveaway is the tufted head.

Actually the shape of the crown. If there's a peak at the back of the head, it's most likely a lesser. If the head is very rounded, it's likely a greater.
 
The operative word being "likely". Head shape can vary to a disconcerting extent with posture. That being said, I'm in the Lesser camp with everybody else on this one. . ..
