barn swallow predation (1 Viewer)

we have a thriving community of barn swallows nesting in the upper framework of our old post and beam barn. we live in north Berwick maine..
we started the spring with 8 nesting pairs. every few days, we are finding one of our swallows on the floor just below a nest site, missing its head and the breast. if this keeps up , we will lose our entire colony. I can't imagine a four legged creature that could effectively crawl upside down across the beams to get to these nests. I am thinking an owl? this happens at night. any thoughts? I have to leave the barns doors open as we also have horses that come and go.

An Owl was my first thought but were they all adults that you found or fledglings or both? Another thought would be raccoons which can climb any distance on a rough surface. Fingers crossed that it comes to an end.

Also, any way that you can put a camcorder facing the nests?

Hi there and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum :t:
