Host of Algonquin Adventures
A number of cormorants are being noticed in Algonquin Park. Concern is growing about the impact they could have on the fish populations in the park's lakes. Are these birds expanding their range everywhere? If so, what factors might be contributing to the expansion? As of June 14th, the issue is third thread down on my website's message board at ... http://members5.boardhost.com/algonquin/ .

Over-abundance of easy to catch food?
Are the lakes stocked at an artificially high level for anglers?

Many birds will increase their egg-laying (or their chick survival rates) in years of plentiful food.
If you (whoever stocks the lakes) are ensuring that a food supply is never diminished then you are ensuring that there will be more cormorants to take advantage of it.

Probably not a very large effect. I'm sure if you look back in the history books, you'd find that there used to be cormorants there in the past, and that they are just re-colonising after having been exterminated by hunting in the 17th/18th centuries.
