Very busy at the bird feeder today! (6 Viewers)

Things have been pretty static here for a while until the last few days.
All the regulars still here, Rooks come first thing for breakfast, up to 6 at a time, just 1 today. Woodpigeons (8), Stock Dove(4),Collared Dove(2) and a Moorhen on the ground seed. On the feeders House Sparrow (2), Tree Sparrow(10),Blue Tit (2), Great Tit(2), Coal Tit(1). Still plenty of Chaffinch (15) today. One each of Wren, Robin, Magpie and Jay. 6 Greenfinch and Yellowhammers and 3 Dunnock. A male GS Woodpecker makes several visits every day the female only comes once or twice a week.
Hadn't seen a Brambling for about 6 weeks until yesterday when 4 females arrived. This morning there was 1 f and 1 male.
Only summer visitors so far have been a Chiffchaff on the 7th and a male Blackcap the following day. Both were gone the next day. Almost forgot the Pheasants, 1 male and his 3 partners.
Still haven't had a siskin in the garden this year but still hoping.
Not much else to report other than one of the Magpies has mastered the fat feeder,Who needs Long tailed tits;)

You have a great range of birds in your garden! I've never seen a Yellowhammer let alone one appear in my garden. Some great photo's too. Magpies are pretty good at getting to all the food in my feeders, not quite as graceful as the Long Tailed Tits though lol.

Jeff, glad you don't have to get too close to the Vultures:eek!: they are very impressive birds. The biggest bird i've seen is the Red Kite and I think they are similar in size?

Pam

Just had two Greenfinch eating nyjer seed with two Goldfinch. Never had two male Greenfinch and never seen them on the feeders before they don't usually hang around that long. Got some great footage on the video cam, when I figure out how to put it all onto the computer i'll post a link!

Great day all round, a Robin appears to have taken up residence the past couple of days and barely half an hour goes by without him making an appearance, we've also had 1 Collard Dove, 1 Woodpigeon, 3 Starlings, 5 House Sparrows, 1 Dunnock, 3 Goldfinch, 2 Robin, 2 Greenfinch, 1 Magpie, 1 Blue Tit and I think that's it.

Pam you just beat me to "the Garden / feeder" update.

Fairly quiet here in species and numbers today, has been for a few days now.

Highight being the Grey Heron coming through the garden early this morning, since then we have had:
Blackbird m+f, Goldfinch 3, Greenfinch 4, Collared Dove 2, Blue tit 2, Chaffinch m+f, Starlings lots of, Carrion 2, Magpie 2, House Sparrows, Pigeons and I think that it is

Attached some pics from the garden earlier this week

Just remembered we had 2 Black headed gulls flying around earlier, these are the first since March 8th, some days we would have a dozen or so coming into the garden for bread, its funny how you miss things when you are used to having them around.

Cracking birds in the garden, Lucky you, I have not seen any in the garden for 2 weeks now...

Welcome to the thread

Good to have the Greenfinch

When the Greenfinch numbers start rising this is what happens :t:

This was in the garden a month ago, and did they squabble 3:)

Yes jealous about the Siskins here too! Some great photos all round :t:

Well the Greenfinch didn't come back but we had 5 Goldfinch on the feeders at once instead of the usual three. Haven't seen that many in one go since January. We've finished the day off with the Woodpigeon, Robin, Starlings, Blackbirds and a Blue Tit.

Just realised too that i've been spelling Collared Dove wrong for weeks!!

Summers day:
2 Buzzards above today, first one was being mobbed by a single Carrion, another Buzzard just cruising the sky above the house.

Grey Heron fly over pm, and Sparrowhawk female just gone past with an escort of around a dozen Starling.

Greens 5, Golds 4, Blackbirds, Great Tit, Robin, House Sparrows, carrion, Rook, Collared Dove, Woodpigeon, Feral pigeon, Magpie

.... and a little hedgehog sniffing around the lawn!!

Just seen a black and white bird flying off in the opposite direction to the Sparrowhawk, can only presume a Pied Wagtail as I cant think of anything else, but it looked a bit larger...only saw the back of it though

Had time to watch feeders today.
5 Goldfinch. 5 Chaffinch, 2 Robin, 2 Dunnock, 2 Blackbirds, 2 Great T's,1 Blue T,
3 Siskins, 4 Greenfinch and 2 Wood pigeon.
Fly bys Jackdaw & Crow.
Still have visiting Squirrel/s.
Would love to see a wild hedgehog, haven't seen one for years.

well.... the Hedgehog story unfolds further.

On Friday evening I was leaving our close in the car when my partner spotted the HH curled up in a ball and being prodded verociously by a Carrion crow. When we stopped the crow backed off a few feet but stood its ground to have another go.

Uncanily..... we had a shoe box in the car and rescue was at hand, we put the HH in the box drove to pets R Us for HH food and left it in the garden to find its own way in life again.

Now a HH box is on its way through the post, food on standby and maybe an addition to the garden wildlife.... we shall see in due course.

Today found an empty bird egg on the lawn 2 x 3cm, greyish blue with brown speckling. I hope it is one that has hatched, I will google the ID of it unless someone can help..

On the garden bird front, todays hit is the Great tit, with plenty of Golds, Greens and the very noisy male Blackbirds singing their hearts out from the tree tops

Regards

Dave

I hope the hedgehog is ok, we had a pair at our last house just before we moved but haven't had any sign here. Funny how we had all the other wildlife at our other house - foxes, hedgehogs, mice, bats of course we have the birds here but only have a rat and none of the 'nicer' wildlife! |<|

We've been out and about a bit this weekend so haven't had much change to watch the garden, but have seen a couple of Goldfinch, a Robin, Woodpigeon, Magpie and lots of Starlings. I did see 3 Song Thrush in the local park though, quite close up too.

There's still some day left of course so i'll probably update later.

Unexpected day off today due to not being well but a good opportunity to watch the garden. Rewarded with a beautiful Mistle Thrush hanging about for a good ten minutes or so.

Had the usual - Robin, Dunnock, Blue Tit, 4 Starlings, 3 House Sparrows, 2 Woodpigeons, Magpie, 2 Collard Doves, 4 Goldfinch and 2 Blackbirds. One of the Woodpigeon got brave and came and sat on the patio table right in front of the doors, they do have really lovely colouring.

Things are getting busier here. Have two robins making regular visits to the ivy growing up my neighbour's garage right by my garden fence, one was sitting in my elderberry and in a neighbour's tree singing just a few minutes ago while the other went in and out of the ivy. Also had a visit from a Wren earlier, which I'd heard around but not seen for a long time!

The food I'm putting out is getting blitzed - the wild bird seed mix is really being hammered and the fatballs are hugely popular. I put three out in the feeder yesterday evening and this evening they were gone! As I looked out in disbelief there was a stream of blue tits, house sparrows and starlings visiting the empty feeder and seemed very disappointed! Have put more in it now so will see if anything remains tomorrow... I only have a couple left from the tub of fifty balls, need to buy some more!

My feeders have gone a bit quiet.
The greens and golds are still regular but not in the large numbers as before. Blue tit pair now joined by a Great tit pair, and the starlings are still 12 strong. House sparrows still very churpy, even had one male scarring off a Starling from the feeding station. A Robin is back on the scene again and the male Blackbirds are still singing a dual across the garden.

The rest of the birds are really the Mags, Jackdaws, Carrion and a few Rooks, Woodpigeon and Collared Doves.

I am reducing the number of feeders now from 9 to around 4, I will put them all out again later in the year.

No sign of the Hedgehog but still got the Bats in the evening.

Nice to have the Mistlethrush Pam, and I am missing the Wren from a few weeks ago Fozzy, both cracking birds to have visit the garden.

Enjoy the Sunshine
Dave

The House Sparrows and Common Grackles have taken over our bird feeders for the most part!

We still get Downy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Mourning Doves, Carolina Wrens, House Finch, American Goldfinch, Pine Siskins (one or two) with the Dark-eyed Junco beneath the feeders. But, when ever the Common Grackles come in everything else leaves (and the grackles are almost ever-present these days)!

Very sad sight

House Finches sometimes perch on and feed at our hummingbird feeders but yesterday I was surprised to see a young House Finch trying to feed while hovering. (See picture 1.)

When I looked more closely I saw the reason for its frantic attempts: The bird's beak was too badly deformed to enable it to eat seeds. (See picture 2.) So presumably the poor thing is trying to survive on sugar water.

I moved the feeder down so that the finch can drink without expending so much energy but I can't see that he'll manage to survive. (See picture 3.)

BTW, the dad brings him to the feeder and chases off other finches while the youngster feeds.

Hi there stateside (Jeff / Larry),

Jeff your 3 photos show how well nature and the human touch can work hand in hand. Well done....

I am sure your effort improves the quality of life for this bird, even for a short while, I hope its for a bit longer than you think

Dave

Hi, Dave.
He's still hanging on. Actually saw him on a seed feeder today but I doubt he was eating from it. Probably just wanted to hang out with the other finches.
Jeff
