My wife and I will be spending considerable time in Madison Co., NY, over the next 2 years, beginning in August of this year. Who can recommend sites, both real and e-, where we can find birds and information about birds?
With all best thanks,

Rick,

I don't know anything about birding in Madison co., but I'd watch a couple of NY listservs:

Statewide: http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html
Oneida Birds (Central NY): http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/ONEI.html
Genessee (West NY): http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/GENE.html
Cayuga Basin region NY: http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html

Also, I'd poke around for general NY as well as specific area birding guides. For example, there's one called: Birding in Central & Western New York : Best Trails & Water Routes for Finding Birds.

Good luck!

Rick,

I'm not familiar with Madison County, being west of there. That said, you may be interested in the following as a possible location:

Given their proximity, you may want to check with the Onondaga Audobon Society:
http://www.onondagaaudubon.org/

With two years to spend, you may want to check out Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, which would be a relatively short drive from Madison County:

The following site, though dated, provides a lot of places in Western New York that you may want to check out:

It will require a little drive on your part, but during the Winter and Spring you may want to check out the Lake Ontario shoreline. Waterfowl in the winter and migrating raptors in the spring (I'm not good identifying raptors, but I saw a cooper's hawk, an American Kestral, and several red tail hawks yesterday). You may want to take a trip to Niagara Falls to view gulls (I'm told that some people even go there to see the falls). These areas are listed on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's website (birding 123, where to bird).

I second the Montezuma recommendation. The bald eagles and ospreys alone make it worth the trip not to mention the tons of other species. I have been there numerious times and always manage to add something to my life life. It shouldn't take long to get from there to Madison.

I am in Oneida County which is just north of Madison County. I haven't done much birding there but I would like to recommend the book, City Cemeteries to Boreal Bogs - Where to go Birding in Central New York by Dorothy Crumb. It is the single best location guide for Central NY's Region 5 which includes Madison County.

Dont forget to photograph the "Bridges" and keep a look out for Meryl Streep.
