Ran across this site, nice description of some species and their habitat
http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/grass/actlist.htm
I was in Nebraska last summer, and the common birds just anywhere were much the same as in Missouri. There seemd to be a small number of species around where people live. There are a few areas away from people where you can see some of the species mentioned.
I may have seen a Swainsons hawk, but not very well, but never saw
White-tailed Hawk, Buteo albicaudatus , Ferruginous hawk, Buteo regalis
so I actually have no unusual hawks from the trip
Cranes migrate over the plains, but nest further north..
I have the one book on prairie birds, by Johnsgard..not sure of spelling, only read a few chapters.
