Ive got a C-700 and would like to be able to add a more powerful zoom. Without spending a bundle, What would yall suggest getting to increase my zoom?

The best I have come across is the Olympus Tcon-17 a 1.7x converter, which requires fitting of the CLA-4 adapter.

Next an d slightly cheaper is the Olympus Tcon-14, a 1.4x adapter, decent enough but not as good as the Tcon-17.

With a bit of fiddling the Tcon-14 can be coupled with the Tcon-17 which is the set-up that I use when not digiscoping, with my Olympus C2100UZ.

eg. Red Grouse c. 40'

That is some shot, Ian! Wow.

The background is impressive, too, allowing all the attention on the bird - is it a la Photoshop or as it comes?

It's actually cropped to remove the slight vignetting, resized to 640x480 and then run through NeatImage which reduces what noise there was whilst at the same time as reducing the file size for faster web upload - 350 kb to 65 kb!

I take delivery on Friday, I hope, of a Nikon 990 so it all begins in earnest then! I need an adaptor for my ED82 and a cable release I think. I am hunting around this site now for past threads to help me spend my money wisely!

Steve,we can compare notes then:eek!: .I shall be watching out for your help threads,as you should receive your camera before I do.
Apparently the 990 has a faster shutter speed than the 4500,and to all accounts it is a slightly superior camera.

Well, it was the last one at Jessop's so I was lucky to get it - mind you, I haven't got it yet! Friday should be the day. Not to be outdone, my son has just ordered a Nikon 4500 from Pixmania to go with his Swaro 65HD and zoom, so he'll be wanting an adapter, too.

I notice a 990 on eBay today but with a "Buy it now" price £60+ over what I'm paying Jessop's - and I get a year's warranty. I emailed asking if he'd reduce the price but he wouldn't - he's had several enquiries already, he said. Odd world - I do think eBay has lost its attractiveness for me and has become too overheated with bidding fever - and the ever-present risk of faulty goods, etc. hovers continually.

Sooo..

Do I have to buy something other than the TC 1.7x to attach it correctly? Or can I just order it and it fits right on?

Hm! Having just checked up on this, Olymous advise that you can't use the Tcon17 with the C700/720/730 models but you can with the C740/750. I am sure that ohers ahve and I have a friend who uses it with the C730.

Maybe you should wait for a C700 user to confirm compatability. All you would need though is the CLA4 adapter into which the Tcon17 screws direct.

Hi Ian: The idea of coupling the two lenses is a pretty cool idea. Would it work on my E-20 do you think. I sure haven't been impressed with the reviews done on the TCON 300 so far and I'm itchin to spend money on some kind of zoom improvement. And the weight has to be an issue if it's going to be practicle. I can't afford to hire a bearer on my treks to the woods.

Not sure if you’ve seen this site photonut :

Are camels cheap in Florida? ;)
For the price of trying to adapt the E-20 to cover that 500mm to 1000mm equivalent range, you might be close to affording one of the new long zoom digicams with image stabilisation. Got to be worth considering...
Are these Cannon cameras you are referring to ? I havn't looked at them lately. If there are other brands let me know. I'm anxious to get this show on the road. (without the camel)

If you're interested in long (350mm+ equivalent) zoom digicams with image stabilisation, current models I know of:
Nikon CP8800 (not sure available yet; likely v. expensive)
Canon S1 IS
Konica Minolta Z3
Panasonic FZ3, FZ15 and FZ20
