Without checking them all in detail.

Edward Charles Stuart Baker (1864-1944) British ornithologist, oologist, collector, Indian Police 1883-1912 (subsp. Cuculus canorus, syn. Garrulax monileger stuarti, subsp. Liocichla phoenicea, syn. Lonchura malacca (ex Munia malacca orientalis Baker, 1925), subsp. Napothera epilepidota, syn. Pericrocotus flammeus fraterculus, subsp. Polyplectron bicalcaratum, subsp. Pomatorhinus ruficollis, Psittiparus, syn. Thalasseus bergii velox, subsp. Tachymarptis melba, syn. Turdinus macrodactylus, Yuhina, subsp. Zapornia fusca).

Edward Charles Stuart Baker (1864-1944) British ornithologist, oologist, Indian Police 1883-1912, collector (syn. Saxicoloides fulicatus erythrurus).

No doubt this guy was honored and I believe everything is correct. We can find obituaries here, here, here and here with picture.

Probably this author here was his father.

But did anyone investigate where and when he was born exactly? Statford-on-Avon? I would be really interessted.

Martin, I´ve only had a quick, brief look, years ago, at Edward Charles Stuart Baker (1864–1944), as he is/was commemorated in the (now dated) Swedish name "Bakers yuhina" for Yuhina bakeri ROTHSCHILD 1926, [here and here] (in line with its earlier English name Baker's Yuhina, for today's White-naped Yuhina, the latter in correspondence with its modern Swedish name vitnackad yuhina), thereby I haven't got further into details ...

... but as his presumed father Edward B. Baker (Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Bengal, Author of Sport in Bengal: and How, When and Where to Seek It, 1887*), seems to have been stationed in India (Bengal) already back in "May and June, 1858" (here) I assume/guess (no proof found) that young Edward Charles Stuart Baker was born somewhere in India ... and thereafter, which was common, almost standard practice, among the Imperial staff, educated "back home", in this case; at Trinity College, Stratford-upon-Avon.

If he was born in India I think it will be quite tricky to find a Birth record, but who knows? I assume you would need to find the name of his Mother first ....

Another clue that might help you find his birth date is that he, in 1896, seems to have married a miss Ethel May Roffey (born c. 1870), who survived him together with four daughters.
However; good luck finding it!

Björn

Here is written:

BIOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNTS Baker, E. C. S. Edward Charles Stuart Baker (1864-1944), born and educated in Stratford-upon-Avon, joined the Indian police in 1883, serving mostly in Assam, of which state he rose to be Inspector General.

@ Björn: Thank's about the rest you wrote. I will consider all this while trying to research him.

One daughter was here

BAKER, Iris, actress; 6. in India, 23 May, 1901 ; d. of E. C. Stuart-Baker and his wife Edith Stuart (Rofley)

So Ethel versus Edith?

Martin, no idea on the true name of his wife, "Ethel" is what I found scrolling the net, but note that Who's Who (1936) writes her Maiden name as Roffey not Rofley (as in your latter quote) ... which might make your search easier ;)

Good luck!

Following the clues given in the Obituary of Mr Edward Charles Stuart Baker (the one in The Ibis, first link, post #1):
He married, in 1897 [!], Ethel Mary Roffrey [!!]. She was with him in Assam for many years, and there his four daughters was born, one of whom is the well known actress, Miss Iris Baker.
Also see Kinnear's ditto in Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London (here).

According to IMDb (here) the "well known" (!? I've never heard of her before) actress (daughter) Iris Baker (i.e. Iris Ada Stuart Baker) was born "May 23, 1899 [!] in Assam, India" ...!? ... (and she died "January 5, 1997 in Surrey, England, UK").

And the "... index to UK wills 1931-1939" tells us:
Ethel May [!] Baker (wife of Edward Charles Stuart Baker) and the said Edward Charles Stuart Baker retired indian policeman [from here, ... far down the page]

Finding the true names, and dates, of the ladies surrounding Mr Edward Charles Stuart Baker (1864–1944) seems like tricky task ... ;)

Good luck solving them!

Björn

PS. For what it´s worth; I still think, assume, he was born in India.

According India, Select Births and Baptisms, 1786-1947 in Ancestry it is possible that he was baptized in Burdwan, Bengal, India (today Bardhaman) in 1864. His mothers first name may be Margarette.

On 17.th November 1858 Edward Biscay Baker (30) married Margarette Susanna Ussher (20). Their son Edward Charles Stuart Baker was born on 4.th October 1864 and baptised at Burdwan, Bengal on 23rd May 1865.

That's it from my side on this thread.
