Dear all,

Is this bird a vermiculated Screech-Owl?

Picture taken on the 30th of January 2017 in Cano Negro - Costa Rica.

Looks like either Pacific or Tropical.

If pushed I'd lean more towards Pacific but vocals are the safest way to separate.

I'll be there in a few weeks, is this bird being seen regularly?

The bird regulary roosts near the bird table in the garden of the Natural Lodge.

Hope you will see it too.

Maybe send it direct to Patrick O'Donnel for an opinion?

If the bird is regular, I'm surprised no one knows what it is.

I'll got to this place in the evening if we don't resolve it and play a recording to see what responds, if anything.

I would favour Pacific Screech Owl at Cano Negro. Will be interested to see if I'm right.

Based purely on illustrations, that's what I'd go for.

Ebird shows lots of Pacific SO observations in the Cano Negro area. There is a single location where some people have ticked Tropical: http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L691866

Only 4 photos of PSO in the BF gallery, yours would be a welcome addition
