Michael Brothers has organized a pelagic trip for May 14th. If you haven't been on one of these pelagics before then take the opportunity as there are some pretty cool birds out there. Black-capped Petrel is definitely worth the trip alone. Here is Michael's invitation for those who would like to participate.
Greeting to all,
I would like to invite you all to participate in another pelagic adventure on
Saturday, May 14, exploring out 100 miles from Ponce de Leon Inlet. We will
cross the entire Gulf Stream and out the east side to the "Tuna Grounds." This is the fourth spring trip we have run to allow the public to visit this
exceptional area.
This trip holds high probability of encountering numerous pelagic species. We
will be in the Gulf Stream at the perfect time - the middle of spring migration
- to have multiple sightings of Black-capped Petrel. In addition, migrants such as Sooty and Audubon’s Shearwaters, all three Storm-Petrels (Leach’s,
Wilson’s and Band-rumped), both Tropicbirds, Parasitic, Pomarine, and
Long-tailed Jaeger and Arctic Tern are possibilities. Previous explorations of
this area at this time of year have gotten Black-caps every trip. Last year, we found the largest group of Arctic Terns ever seen in Florida - 62! In addition we had several Black-capped Petrels, all three Storm-Petrels, jaegers, and even three White-tailed Tropicbirds! The year before we also had a South Polar Skua on this trip, as well as a White-tailed Tropicbird.
This trip is run as a fund-raiser for the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet.
We will leave at 4:00 a.m.
and return at 9:00 p.m.
Please email me for more information or to reserve your spot. I need 40 people to make the trip a go.
Thanks,
Michael
