Panama butterfly - a bit like red admiral (1 Viewer)

George Edwards

Nom de plume
This one is still bugging me from a trip earlier this year - I don't even know the genus. Has anyone here seen one before? Maybe it will be known to Americans on the forum. Seen in the western highlands near Costa Rica.

Hi, George!! :hi:

It is a Nymphalid, yes, very related to the Admirals. Its name is Reddish Mapwing (Hypanartia trimaculata). Lovely butterfly! Pity the poor thing knew better days in its life! :-O :t:

Hi Gavia - I was hoping I could count on you! Many thanks :) While I've got this open I'll upload another couple which maybe you can have a go at. They were both taken in Iguacu, western Brazil. And I think I may have narrowed them down to Leafwings / Aneae sp . Cheers.
