Mr. Stronach's Karamoja Apalis (1 Viewer)

Björn Bergenholtz

(former alias "Calalp")
Sweden
Here´s some additional info regarding ...

• the subspecies Apalis karamojae stronachi STUART & COLLAR 1985 (here):
"Remarks. We name this subspecies in honour of the late B. W. H. Stronach, one of the collectors of the type specimen. ..."
... surely this must be (?) the Kenyan/Irish ornithologist and collector Brian Stronach, whose full name was Brian William Hemsworth Stronach (19281984), "former Tsetse Officer and well-known Game Warden" as well as Wild Life Lecturer & "Wildlife Coll. Instr. in Tanzania" ... and on top of that a good Cricket Player! A "Right hand bat", on a National level.

Born 4 July 1928 Nairobi, Kenya, ... Educated: St Andrew's College, Grahamstown, South Africa & Dublin University ... collected the Type specimen (together with I. H. Dillingham), a Male bird, on the Slopes of Ngongoro, at the Wembere Steppe, Nzega District, Tanzania, 19 February 1962 ... and he died in April 1984, in Galway, Irleland.

That´s about all I could find on Mr. Stronach (he´s not one of "my guys") ... I just stumbled upon "his" Apalis, and got a bit curious, one lazy afternoon ... thereby take it for what it´s worth!

However; enjoy!

Björn

PS. Not to confuse with his Son the ditto ornithologist and conservationist Dr. Neil Richard Hemsworth Stronach (born 1956).
