Advance NOTICE of forthcoming Work.

Two very important tasks will be carried out on the Reserve over the next few week's.
Info from Eleanor Reserve Manager.

Neil (contractor) will be out spraying the Crassula on the Moors on 30th Oct - 2 Nov . He will be working around the Broadmeadow Pool where the crassula has covered the banks and island.on the pool they dredged. If those dates change he will let us know. Weather related

Also, Nick (contractor) will be starting the fox fence around the 5th November but will be out on the Flashes this coming Monday to drop off equipment and potentially take some of the old fence away. We will be taking down/replacing the fence in sections rather than all at once. The work will last for a few weeks and could stretch further depending on weather and whether the neighbour has cattle on or not. We obviously want it to be done as quickly as possible before it gets too wet. Working days will be Mon-Fri as usual although if we run out of time because of worsening conditions we may have to resort to weekend work but I can only see that happening in the extreme!
Cheers John:t:

From the Flashes this morning Dave J reports:

2 Yellowhammer, 4 Little Egret, 2 Green Sandpiper, 9 Curlew, 11 Meadow Pipit, 35 Fieldfare, 8 Chaffinch, 2 Redpoll, 3 Siskin, 2 Skylark

SNOW BUNTING briefly at the Flashes in the company of Meadow Pipits then flew off as per Paul Croft

The Snow Bunting dropped down on to the spit (where Rock Pipits were foraging earlier in the week) briefly amongst Meadow Pipits but got stick from them. It then flew to hedgerow right of hide where it showed well for a minute or so before flying off alone south

Black-headed Gull sporting yellow leg ring 2RNJ at the Moors Pool as per Mike

Black-headed Gull yellow "2RNJ" was noted last year at the Moors Pool on the 2nd and 16th September; it was ringed as a juvenile at Fishers Green, Essex on the 16th October 2016. I suspect I also had this gull at the Flashes earlier this year on the 3rd September.

Work party 23rd OCTOBER

This Tuesday we will be continuing the Willow Pollarding on the southern border of the MOORS.
PLEASE meet at the East hide 9am

Only the second ever record for the reserve - think the first was as far back as 1943!!

On March 11th 1944 a Snow Bunting was found at Upton Warren pool by A.J. Martin. The Birmingham Bird Club (now the WMBC) report for that year originally recorded it as being found on May 11th. This error was amended in the following year's report.

From the Flashes this morning Andy P reports:

191 Lapwing, 12 Curlew, 11 Snipe, c10 Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail.

Little Egret over Sailing Pool

From the Moors Pool Andy A further reports:

5 Snipe, 2 Curlew (were 4), 2 Gadwall, 2 Pochard, 22 Shoveler, 37 Tufted Duck , 6 Cormorant, c100 Coot, c20 Teal
