Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds April 14, 2014

Anyone think the Snipe is Swin-tailed? How about that for a Tree Sparrow! All dressed up for the show! Had me thinking Russet Sparrow for a minute without bins which caused some mild panic on the trail.

How wonderful to see such large numbers of bluetails! I guess this has been more than usual numbers? Perhaps a good breeding year last year.... They do remind me of bluebirds in NA. Very handsome male in #1040.

As Gretchen said, too many male Bluetails you have now. In post #1033, after looking at those Kentish Plover flock for few dozen times, still could not find the Dunlin. Do you have Dunlin among them?

Dunlin

Dev and others,

The Dunlin is just left of center in the photo approximately in the middle (middle height). See the attachment. It's much easier on the larger sized photo;)

Yes the Bluetail invasion was amazing. Most are gone now. I was expecting one on the potted plant of my 6th floor balcony! Sadly it never happened....

Jinshitan to Zhuanghe April 19, 2014

Thanks Mike, I aim to please!

Full day today with a visitor from Shenyang. Today was my first time seeing Relict Gull at the Pikou site. I've seen large numbers a bit north of there in winter (first found by Paul Holt). We were pleased with today but maybe could have had more shorebird species on April 19? All in all, a wonderful day out.

Full day today with a visitor from Shenyang. ... All in all, a wonderful day out.

Allow me to add some color to Tom's mirthless report! ;)

I was the visitor from Shenyang. I made contact with Tom through this site several years ago and despite being in the same province and Tom sitting on top of some excellent locations things never quite lined up for me to make the trip.

Last weekend my wife and son were out of town and work slowed down a bit, so I hopped on the new bullet train from Shenyang to Dalian and Tom and a friend of his picked me up at 0500 Saturday morning.

We were cautiously hopeful for 100 species but a funky high tide meant we fell short. Tom, ever the diligent guide, spent most of the morning bemoaning and apologizing for the "slow" sightings. Meanwhile I was crammed in the back of the car having the time of my life because:

  1. a great day in Shenyang is 20 species
  2. I always bird alone and here I was with two other passionate birders for a day
  3. Tom is a phenom - where I see "a duck" in the distance Tom knows the ID, when I hear "a songbird" in the thicket Tom knows the ID, when I roughly describe a glimpse of a bird Tom knows the ID. It was wondrous to witness.
I returned to Shenyang on Sunday afternoon refreshed mentally, and with my birding passion at an all-time high.

One thousand thank-yous are not enough, Tom. :t: I can't wait to buy your upcoming book!

PS - some "action" photos attached. Please excuse the budget-price camera phone quality!

Thanks for clarifying the Dunlin Tom, i could now see the black belly after you pointed out, i wil check my eyes over the weekend ;-)
Superb variety of birds you have now. Along with Mike, i'm also in his team for your Chinese Egret, haven't got a satisfying view yet. Love those Godwits lined up on the rock, something which we don't have here (not the Godwits but the rocky shore).

Andrew, good to have you back, Thanks for adding the action pics. It's a nice change to a birdful report ;-)

+1 for your book Tom, Dalian is in my toplist for the autumn raptor migration. Waiting to cross that from my bucket list.

Dev, c'mon up! Thanks Andrew, come again!

Mike, the photos of Chinese Egrets below are in no way intended to create jealousy or malice;) What is this place known as Jinshitan where the Chinese Egrets even sit on the power lines?

Check out the Japanese Quail recording below.

Also, I asked the Little Owl to do his/her best reaction to the rapid development going on around it's home. I thought I captured the reaction quite well....

More great shots Tom. Love the egret shots with the wind-blown crests. BFS also do this in full breeding plumage. Since they breed on the same outcrops maybe this is a case of convergent evolution.

Maybe it also proves that native Americans were birding at Jinshitan millennia ago and the world famous chief's headdress is the sole cultural linkage to their source of origin?

How's that for random - time for the weekend I think.

Cheers
Mike

Mike, a whole new slant on the Berengia Theory! Boom! Didn't ever make that connection myself. And people think we get into birding for the birds!.....

Off to Laotieshan for 3 days next week.

We're leaving for a three day family visit to the Laotieshan banding station tomorrow.

Tom,

Have you ever done a Beidaihe trip during migration? I haven't and I'm curious how Laotieshan and Jinshitan stack up against it. Your spots are quite a bit closer to Shenyang! |;|

Laotieshan April 28+29, 2014

So....went to Laotieshan for 3 days with my two kids but found out that they are not banding birds this spring.....oops.
Made up with a trip to the very nice new outdoor hot spring here in Jinshitan and all is forgotten for now:-C We'll go back next October.

We did stay one night and I got out from 5-9 this morning. One of the banding station workers also took me to some wetland/mudflat areas yesterday afternoon. List from both below.

Female Blue and White Flycatchers don't get enough press!

Although I did see some good stuff this morning, the bulk of migrants have yet to arrive. Probably at the end of this week or next.

The one warbler recording below....the only match on XenoCanto.org is Hume's Leaf Warbler? Yes, need some confirmation me thinks. I was on the ridge where Terry's "landscaping" is still very much in tact (thanks Terry!) and a Warbler landed near me but I couldn't get on it. I didn't recognize the call so quickly did a recording as it flew off. There were many Pallas's Leaf and Eastern Crowned Warblers right in the area. I only had time to see that is was warbler size as it flew off.

Here's another question...do Magpies migrate? There was a large group of 50 or more that rose up from the canopy around 5:30 and spiraled up much like a group of Amur Falcons. They went way way up and seemed to be testing the wind. After 10 minutes of this they quickly descended as if the conditions weren't right. Would they do this every morning to disperse for the day? Were they thinking about migrating? I really have no idea about magpies as I treat them much like a pest but I'm curious what they were doing. Laotieshan is famous for scenarios like this that leave a birder wondering.

There were also many porpoise (Finless Porpoise) around. Each time I scanned out from the ridge I would see 3-5 of them. After seeing them again, I am more convinced this isn't what Stephen and I recorded there last summer. The thing we saw was much much larger.

I didn't really do a lot of sea-watching. I found 1 Streaked Shearwater for the list and then returned to the forest. I'm sure there were more.

Anyways, the list:
