2002 update of bird population indicator.................
The Wild Bird Population Headline Indicator will be next be updated in a year's time, rather than this month, because the Foot and Mouth outbreak meant data could not be collected as usual, the Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) announced today. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), who normally collect the data, have advised Defra that estimations were hampered by fieldwork difficulties arising from Foot and Mouth. Due to many survey sites being inaccessible, data from 2001 could not be properly collated.

TV hunt for famous squirrels..............
A TV company is hunting for a star with a glossy coat, a liking for nuts and the ability to scale a seven-storey building at speed. The BBC Bristol wildlife unit is searching for a family of squirrels who once starred in a TV programme called Mission Impossible. The show, broadcast seven years ago, showed the squirrels scaling the outside of a seven-storey block of flats in Brighton and Hove, to reach the top-floor flat of a woman who fed them. Now, the company is making a follow-up called Daylight Robbery and wants the squirrels - or more likely their ancestors - to have a starring role again.
