It would be interesting to hear from anyone recording Common Cuckoo host species other than Meadow Pipit or Dunnock in the county. The groups of Cuckoo frequenting Bodmin Moor all appear to target Meadow Pipits, if this is the same picture throughout the county it could suggest that Cornish female Cuckoos have specialized (adapted their eggs to mimic Meadow Pipits eggs) if this is true these females are likely to have little success with Reed Warbler nests, unlike the Cuckoo population that visits the Somerset Levels specializing in Reed Warbler hosts, it also links the future of the Cuckoo in Cornwall to the density and breeding success of, firstly the Meadow Pipit and secondly the Dunnock. The Dunnock appears to be the safety net for this restrictive speciation in as much as they appear to show no egg discrimination, I have found (in my youth) 2 Dunnocks nests containing Cuckoos eggs, both eggs looked larger and nothing like the blue Dunnocks eggs, in one of these nests a young Cuckoo was successfully reared by the foster parents. Many years later I learned that some strains of Cuckoo (in Europe) could match the blue egg-type to successfully parasitize Redstarts.

Lesser-type Redpoll.

Observing several adult Lesser-type Redpoll feeding on floating vegetation yesterday I noted a remarkable amount of individual plumage/abrasion variation, especially in the median and greater covert pale tips (forming a double wing-bar) and pale edges to secondaries. First photo left shows a worn, though still dark individual with pale tips to coverts virtually none existent, second from left, a bird feeding a few feet away showed broad white covert tips and secondary edges.
