Hello to all of you and wishes for a happy new 2014!

I would like to inform you about lake Kerkini of North Greece, one of the best wetlands/ birding places of mainland Greece.
The area has been titled as a national park in 2006 and it belongs to the Ramsar wetlands since 1990.
Inside the national park area more than 300 birds have been recorded. Among them, at least 137 are breeders, 134 are winter visitors and 163 are passage migrants which use the wetland as a stop station for feeding and resting.

Some of the most characteristic and emblematic bird species are the Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant. Other important species include the wintering Finnoscandian population of Lesser White Fronted-Geese, the wintering Greater Spotted Eagles, the breeding Spoonbills, Glossy Ibises, Heron and Egret species (Grey Heron, Great White Egret, Little Egret, Squacco Heron, Night Heron, Little Bittern and recently the Cattle Egret too), Levant Sparrowhawks, Booted Eagles, Short-toed Eagles, Lesser Spotted Eagles and many other species including all the European Woodpecker species (except the Three-toed).

The area is home also to the most large mammals of Europe (Grey Wolf, Golden Jackal, Otter, Badger, Red Fox, Roe Deer, Wildhog, Stone Marten, Red Squirrel, European Wildcat, European Hare, Eastern Hedgehog and Weasel).
There are also a number of reptiles (26), amphibians (11) and many butterfly species (128).

Kerkini is also hosting the larger number of grazing livistock Water Bufallos in Greece. There are about 2800 bufallos out from the total 3200 of Greece. This Bufallo is recognized as a dinstict Greek race.

I 've attached you a long series of photos too, resembling some of the species, habitats and landscapes of the area.
I hope you 'll like them.

For people who are interested for more information about the area, or maybe other places of North Greece please contact me for more help.
I also work as a guide so for guidance or other services i can also help you.

Regards,

George

Another link to a trip report from Feb 2012:
http://thenaturalstone.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/northern-greece.html

Also had Wildcat on this trip as well as Brown Bear signs. The birding was amazing and of the main bird targets we only missed Imperial Eagle and White-backed Woodpecker I think. Highlights for me were good views of Free-tailed Bats and Eagle Owl. Never seen so many Hawfinches anywhere.

A remarkable area for a whole range of wildlife.

Hello,

'orniodesigns' i 've read your report, it was really nice.
Most interesting record for me was the presense of 40 Red-breasted Geese, a species that is not annual at Kerkini and usually in smaller numbers.
Apart from that, the footprints and the droppings you show in the pictures too, are not from Brown Bears, but from a much smaller sized mammal. The size resembles more a Fox? or a Badger? maybe or something else but not a Bear for sure.

Thanks a lot for the nice report.

George

Hello again,

Brian Stone my last comment #11 was for your report as you probably understood..

'oriodesigns', besides your bad experience in Athens and during your journey to Kerkini, you had a nice time here in Kerkini..
Many things of your description (especially about the village of Kerkini (street dogs, Little owls on the roofs etc., the harbour, about people of the ex-information center / now Management authority remain the same!

Most interesting of your records was the Barnacle Goose of course. I have no idea (and maybe no one does) if that was a real wild bird and if that bird it is writen on the list of Kerkini lake.

Thank you both for your comments!

George

Dont worry! Athens problems were nothing compared to our other trips...
I really like nature of northern Greece and I will wisit those places again for sure. I have been there only in winter so I need to get summer birds to my Greece list.

I think that observation of Barnacle is in the list of Kerkini.

Some recent news from Lake Kerkini:

The Lesser White-fronted Geese are back to Kerkini since 20/01/15. 42 birds have been recorded that day and some days later the rest of he flock arrived, 53 birds in total. The birds first arrived in Greece (lake Kerkini) on the first week of October and in early December they 've departured to Evros delta (north-eastern Greece), where they've stayed until 19/01/15.
This year we have less birds in comparison with last year (57) and 2 years ago (56).

Other interesting birds this winter apart from the usual were 9 Ryddy Shelducks and 2 Scaups.

George

P.S.: I can't find a way to post a picture of the LWF Geese for some reason.

Hi George,
Thanks for the fascinating info on Kerkini. How is Kerkini mid-October? I'm planning on visiting the region to do some birding next week, and I'm wondering how much time to spend in Kerkini vs. other places like Evros Delta and the Rhodopes and Elatia and Fractos.

Also, are you available to do some guiding anytime between October 14 and 23? Feel free to PM me if you are.

Kerkini in October is excellent !
Spotted Eagle is very good chance on east site of lake.
Also good chance in Axios delta near Saloniki.
I saw also one loon there.

Imperial Eagle I saw only in Former Yugoslawian Republic Macedonia.

Very good place is also Porto Lagos.

I'm very interested in a quick 2 day visit in May or June for the shrikes, woodpeckers, Orioles, warblers, eagles, hoopoes, ortolans, hawfinches, pelicans etc.
Which would be the best weekend timing ?
Can anyone recommend a guide ?
Which birds would I miss (other than the vultures) by going here rather than Dadia forest (which looks more difficult to get to flying from the UK)?

Thanks
Tony
